2011

Like most kids, I had some vague concept of what I wanted to be. What about you? A cowboy, astronaut, superhero, rock star or maybe a princess? Maybe even all of the above ? :)

How unrealistic or fantastical as these ideas may seem now, they were my first dreams. I think very few ppl are aspired to be the mid-regional assistant or the CEO of some company, pushing papers in the prime of lives yet lot of ppl find themselves in exactly that place as adults.

How should I say. The world's a different place when we got older.

Dreams of being a superhero are crushed by reality. Newton told us that superman dont fly. Other dreams are sapped by daily responsibilities. You still have mouth to feed or some expectation to fulfil. But I believe there's that little part of us that still dreams big.

Define what you want in 2011. Know the steps to achieve the goals, make the time, break the steps and feed ur brain. At the age of 22, I should know the difference of a pipe of dream and an accomplished goal. Every ladder requires steps. Quote from harry : 人生没有目标,跟咸鱼有什么分别?

Ramdom update. Done with my very last mid term test in pure electronics degree. Was supposed to have a dance test ytday evening but it had been postponed till the next week which means there are 2 dance tests in a roll. There is a kneeling posture in the dance steps and this is the consequence. It is a little annoying because I would like to hit the Xmas celebration with short pants but not with the two big bruises on my knees. lol.

are you listening ?

The 5 months internship is one the memorable one. It is the breathing rose with sweets in every fold. I admire how these ppl being such responsible engineers and technologist. and I would like to thank them for every guidance. It needs no words. I truly appreciate it. Ppl are attracted by virtue of similarity, the other by difference. I think I am the latter one. Because they'd been someone's special.

Back to the topic. I would actually like to share on the art of listening.

We have two ears and only one mouth. Just based on our body parts,, we'd think we are all be natural listeners. But we're really not. I am reminded that I am a really bad listener and I'd only come across the bad habit of mine! We are born with the ability to hear, but we have to develop the ability to LISTEN. Well the normal listening mode for most ppl is passive. Words come in one ear, and go out the other. Important information is missed. Details are overlooked. Reasoning is misunderstood. Ppl feel disrespected. and things turn worse when throughout these years, I'd actually build up the ability to filter out the thoughts and completely sinking in.

Listening well is much harder than I think. I know it leads devastating consequences and I am working out to have the right frame of mind to always get prepared to be a active listener. The first thing is stop multitasking, perhaps? If i am checking my email while talking on the phone, I am not listening to that person anyway. and stop interrupting the conversation! I really wanna say a big thank you to them who had pinpointed my bad habits before I leave Intel :D

I'd always jumped the gun by rushing to judgement before ppl have even finished talking. and I tend to interrupt to say I am disagree. In fact, I shouldn't even be thinking about what I am going to say next. Just listen. Even after they're done, I might want to pause to think before responding.

After all, the amount of talking is a function of our conversation style. Some ppl wont have trouble holding back comments and can easily listen in a conversation. If you're like me, you're instinct is to treat conversations like a battleground, loading ammunition and firing ideas to match the wits of whoever you're competing against. and that's bad :(

ps. thanks to Kee and laogao for reminding me :)

There are literally hundreds if not thousands of little things we can do to raise the bar in our lives. So many of these things are easy to do. and can be accomplished in less than 10 seconds. They just require an intentional effort. Well, what is critical to understand is that the ultimate fulfilment and happiness will come from doing the little things that matter.

Things that come across my mind with a short list of things we can do in less than 10 seconds.

  • make it a point to say the words " i love you " to the ppl in ur home every single day
  • offer a friendly authentic smile. A smile radiates warmth, put ppl at ease and makes you likable :)
  • make comfortable eye contact
  • offer a word of encouragement. yea sometimes this is all a person needs to build confidence and take the next big step. This is BIG !
  • accept responsibility when you're wrong. Its the sign of a person with character.
  • congratulate ur opponents. Good sportsmanship is evidence of leadership.
  • Click the LIKE button on someone's FB post. Its an easy way to demonstrate interest :)
  • Lastly, give someone a hug. A hug is a sign that you really care for the other person.

Soon everyone will be walking around humming holiday tunes and acting jollier than usual. Merry Christmas.

Christmas. A day when family and friends gather for a time of celebration and feasting. Soon ur turkey and stuffing will be in the oven and pleasant aromas will fill the kitchen. I am smiling while running my fingers on the keyboard right this moment picturing the smiles on everyone's face. In fact, there is christmas caroling in my house couple of hours ago. Almost 30 of them with Christmas hat on, showered us with joyful Christmas carols. I am truly blessed.

I feel refreshed and full of life.

For many of us this holiday season will be filled with delicious food, exciting presents, and fun memories as we spend time with our families. That, however, will not be the case for some ppl. I came across with an article. Its about a girl from Swaziland, Africa. She suffered from disability. and more about Swazi culture, ppl with disability are viewed as being demon possessed. The unfortunate girl, who is already struggling for survival, have to bear an additional burden.

To dismay, her dad had abandoned her years before and her mother remarried, didn't want her and left her behind. Her great grandmother is now raising her. The volunteer who has paid her a visit in Swaziland, told the great grandmother :"you've got one special girl here" But her reaction was shocking. She said," You can have her! "

yet through all these, she maintained the surprisingly positive spirit.

and I just couldn't get her out of my heart and mind.

In our busy and demanding lives, its easy to focus on our challenges and overlook the things we are truly blessed to enjoy. Its always easy to lament what we dont have, rather than appreciate what we do have. Dont take anything you have for granted. Instead express ur gratitude for all ur many blessings. Great and small.

3 billion ppl on the face of the earth go to bed hungry every night. But 4 billion ppl go to bed every night hungry for a simple word of encouragement and recognition.

If you would like to see how ur words impacting on others, watch this award winning clip. It is one of the best clip I'd ever seen besides earthlings. Watch it when you have the spare 17 minutes :)

The wrong words can rip ppl apart and make them wonder if they ever had anything in common at all. The right ones can draw ppl closer and make them wonder how they ever lived apart. After all, the fabric of relationship is fragile. The words you use either sew the stitches tighter together, or loosen the seams till the fraying threads can barely hold themselves together.

Be committed to continuing the growth and development. Never stop mastering the little things that make you a better person. We are 22 and we are young enough to grow personally and build up our value. There are so much out there to see and experience. My brother reminds me not to forget that I have a dream. Never forget about ur dream. It keeps you moving. The benefits go far beyond the money. You will feel great about the person you're becoming. You will be more fulfilled and ur life journey will be more enjoyable. Even if there is a difficult time, it would mark a memorable journey. Let's start the game! I am not asking you to be a nerdy nor career queen. Stilettos, short dress, fun sequins, provocative lace and frilled details are still my favourite. But hold a second, Mark Zuckerberg makes a different at the age of 26 and we are just 4 years younger! I shall spend less of my time in blog but sth that really value adding. Signing off :)
