No wonder listening is an undervalued art. Research shows that we speak at a rate much faster than the capacity we have in listening per minute. So what are we actually doing with the extra space in our mind when someone else is talking? Are we really listening ? Am I listening ? Its not a fresh hot issue that I'd found myself drifting from listening to someone. In another precise word. Dreaming.

I understand the bereft feeling when someone is trying to share the most inner thought and feeling with me and not getting my full attention. I have no intention in doing that. I would have whispered my apology in ur ear :) I am sorry. and I know listening is essential for a fulfilling relationship.Just like how you'd always listened to me :) and I want our connection to deepen :)

Happy 2012 everyone~ Its a wonderful magic carpet ride experiencing the whirlwind of ups and downs throughout the year. Final Year Project. Convocation. My first job. Best friend leaving. Little cute Felix to join our Teoh family :) Its like a drastic transition in a short one year.

Family, boyfie, and friends complete my fabulous 2011 :)

and I am determined for a better yeanfern in this upcoming 2012.

anyway its the time of year when goals are made and should never being abandoned a few weeks later lol. Not achieving what you set out to do means you will yet again fail to move toward the life you desire which leads to nth but regret rightttt? We are equipped. and now its time to fly. Just like a G6. Inertia can be difficult to overcome. but sth we may overlook is the influence from ppl around us.

I am greedy. I want work-life balance. Often what we believe we want is not what we want at all. New year resolution? It doesn't matter whether you set goals or not. as long as you're doing sth that makes you COME ALIVE~ I literally spend some time to think what I actually want, staying present, here and now. and let any and all thoughts pass. Dont give them meaning, and dont add to them. because I believe it is from this blank, calm state that we can begin to look at what has gone well last year, and what hasn't.

How many ppl have told you that some day they will go after their dreams, follow their passion, and be happy ? A whole bucket load I'd bet. and one of those ppl perhaps Yeoh, Yean Fern :/ Some day is not on the calendar, and the longer you wait, the long you wait..It doesn't get any simpler than that!

Bottom line ? we're not missing anything except the proper attitude and willingness to take action. I am always afraid I dont have anything unique to give to ppl. But as time goes by with more wisdom you'd gained, I know we all have sth to contribute to the world. and yes that includes everyone of us. and that sth is the exact thing that makes us come alive :) I'd this thought stronger injected after a night farewell with TY and Veron on the other night. A very good Friday night. You just love to talk to someone who'd truly inspired you.

You have to decide whether you're happy with where you're now, or whether you want to take action and work towards sth that truly fulfills you..Anyone can do it, if they're willing to suspend their disbelief and take action. Thanks for ur gentle reminder.

Imagine going to the end of ur life. If you somehow could imagine the last 24 hours of ur life, think about what would be important to you at the point in time..Is it money? is it appreciating the fact you worked at a job you despised? or is it the ppl around you, and the experiences you've had? When I did this, I realized that what was important were the relationships and connections I have with the ppl around me. So I was reading through some of my old blog posts today. and one thought just running thru my mind: when did I get so boring? In other words, when did I start to take myself so seriously? Sheesh. I started this blog with references to my elder brother's profile and lists of words I love or hate. Now its all heavy sayings leading to heavy pondering about life. Who am I? Like, seriously, who writes about sun-warmed tomatoes? I have to laugh at myself. Okay, here are some justifications, though :)

1. I've been going thru re-entry. not just from a student to an engineer, but from one lifestyle to a totally different lifestyle. and so I've found writing to be a natural and helpful outlet for me. And once I finish a piece, I think, why not throw that up on the long-not-updated-blog?

2. Im not working so much, and I have a crappy internet connection at home, so I dont really have oodles of time to piece together fluffy blogs filled with images and links to Amazon and Wikipedia. After you worked, you find it time is so precious to do things you really find joy. (obviously to me, blogging is not in the list. Once it was. and I'd just picked up a new hobby)

3. I dont know. I just feel like there needs to be a third. Maybe I've become a bit of snob? Maybe I think you guys have come to expect more from me than girl-reviews of movies and TV shows haha. That's not all bad. There is still room on here for confessions of guilty pleasures.

Yes, there's a certain comfort in going with the flow, being one of many, and following the same path as millions before us. Yes, its easier to not be stupid and put ourselves way out on a ledge and put ourselves in predictable and stable life. Yes, its fun to fantasize about one day someone walks in and "discovers" our hidden brilliance and plucks us from our normal life and drops us into the one of our dreams.

But eventually, it becomes obvious that the "discovery" will never come and that stability and security is an illusion. I know, because I've been there. and I think I am still there. For years I took a typical approach to my life. Follow the crowd, get a decent somewhat stable job, and avoid rocking boat by making any drastic changes. In my experience, because we dont have our mind right. We have these little devils sitting on our shoulder, feeding our lies about how the world works and how we should act in it. We probably picked up some of these ideas from our parents, others from our teachers, and still other from our friends and co-workers. But eventually I realize a couple of things.

No matter how stable or secure you think ur situation is, everything can change in an instant
The longer you go with the flow and wait for someone to give you an opportunity, the harder it gets to break out
Pretty much the only future that comes with following the masses and taking the "safe" path is a life of perpetual mediority

Anyway its just some random thought after watching 3 Idiots. It tells the story of every engineering student. Last but not least, a quote from the movie : Take ur hand, put it on ur heart, and say : Aal Izz Well (all is well) :)

I think that one of the most dreadful feelings to have is the feeling that we'd running out of time that life is passing by us and we are not doing things that we want to do, we're not living it the way we could be living it. Really..apart from physical pain, I cant think of any worse kind of pain than the sadness resulting from the perception of wasting our life. And if you're like me who believe this life is all we have, the feeling only magnifies it..

Often I find that we have a tendency to surround us with so much "stuff" that I often forget the end game, or the goal I'd striving for. Years are burned this way. I never want to wake up after a couple of years, wondering what'd happened :)

At times I find myself accidentally drowning into the ANT infestation, or you call that Automatic-Negative-Thought. So I try really hard to look into the monster eyes and figure out the root cause for my limiting beliefs. and I find myself that I am always focusing and preparing for all the bad things that "could" happen and it promotes my anxiety and magnifies my worry. Think another way round, I am using my imagination to tell stories, just that it often falls on the negative side.

The truth is, I am fallible. and the BIG news is, we are all fallible. We all make mistakes. But confident ppl carry themselves in a diff way than others. They earn respect. They command attention. They attract success. and what enticed and inspired me much after I'd joined Intel for the past 5 weeks are those colleagues who often showed those unique qualities and gifts.

and another truth is I am struggling from low self-esteem when I come across that I act and behave like a kid. So one of my most common technique used for building self-esteem is the use of affirmation. Affirmation are things you tell urself on a regular basis to affirm ur personal strength and value. So when I'd a problem forefront in my head, I start to write it up. Like now. Nobody will read it. I wont even read it. Its simply a method to get those thoughts out of my head.

So ever since I started "brain dumping", I become a big believer in its power :) Because I think every little morsel of our brain is a valuable real estate. Part of our brain holds the knowledge we will use to solve problems. Part of our brain holds thoughts and feelings of excitement and happiness. Part of our brain holds the potential for creativity. So the more space in my brain that is taken up by worry, sadness, and frustration, the less space I'd for positive growth.

The grand final of Innovate Malaysia Design Competition 2011 fall on 11 June at Altera Penang. It is an engineering design competition with collaboration among Agilent, Altera, Intel and DreamCatcher which opened to all local undergraduate engineering or computer science students. The competition is divided into three separate tracks using different platforms by Agilent, Altera, and Intel respectively :)

I know its going to be uneasy. I know there's so much to learn. and I think I will enjoy the transformation. Its a period or renewal, Although not all the adjustments will be comfortable, I know they will bring me joy. and because I know so many of my dear friends out there are striving really hard for their dreams as well. I'd been online searching for some yoga classes offered in Penang. So that I can rely on yoga that promises me a balance of mind and body when stressful or sedentary life of modern times have subjected all of us to tension, ending up with a weary body and a confused mind. and of course the various postures in yoga that will help to tone our body and gain the better figure. Not assuming that I am going to be as thin as a rail but I would love to increase my flexibility :)

I prefer Ashtanga Yoga, for I'd practiced Ashtanga yoga during school days for the past 3 years. Ashley my yoga instructor is fantastic. I enjoy so much attending her yoga classes. and I think of her every time when I practice yoga at home! There are a couple of yoga studios that I am considering right now.

Life has been tranquil and calm lately. It is good I can take time to stop and smell the roses :) But there's a growing part of me that's looking around for sth fun to do. Getting dangerously close to being bored? That's unacceptable! Sometimes you just have to mix up the regular routine and toss in some new variables. I think a change in surrounding is always the fastest way to a fresher feeling. I am experiencing it. Just left the place I'd stayed for 4 years. and going to venture into working world soon.

I was driving yesterday, happily minding my own business and practicing my new skill of not singing while behind the wheel. ( I am doing very well, thank you for asking :P ) Suddenly some light started blinking. It looked like a genie in an oil canister to me. I am a girl, so I am thinking, I need to top up fuel in my car. As I was driving towards the petrol station, I started thinking....HEY when does my dashboard blink to tell me I need sth! Water. Sleep. Play? perhaps :P What are my indicators that I am running out of some essential component to thrive? Hello missyeoh, time to buckle up!

Its not good that you got ur vision board on the wall and you spend five minutes every morning daydreaming about the huge house you want, the massive paycheck, that flashy car. You dont seem to be getting any closer right while keep imagining perfect future. But there's another thing called "sense of accomplishment" and "self-value adding" that make you a better person :)

Anyway I would say it is so niceee catching up with an old friend :D We'd a one day penang tour in fact from gurney to straits quay and back to queensbay. Not much to see. Not much to play. Not much to shop..BUT we'd some quality time together :) and lastly, I am feeling excited for my friend who has just embarked a new chapter of her life recently as a working adult in penang! all the best my friend! Some find happiness in their careers while others prefer the bliss found in their marriage or other intimate relationship :)

I'd always enticed and look forward to attend talk organized by YCM. It brings messages. It adds value. It injects motivation. We dun get this in our lecture notes. It makes you so hungry for an interesting and meaningful life :) I believe there's no easy tips to transform our lives radically. There's no magic bullet. There never is! Because hard work trumps wishful thinking :)

The past few weeks it has been nothing but happy times (if I discount the fyp period of course)

I run on auto pilot these days. My systems know where to go without me having to direct it. My hands know what to reach out for without my brain having to send an impulse. I drive home and I dont even remember the journey back home. Workload has definitely picked up at the speed of lightning and because of that I've become so absent minded lately !

Flying is an amazing feeling..I'm not being figurative or clever here. Im talking bout legitimate soaring through the air, w/o the aid of wings or jet engines. You may think what Im saying is impossible. HOW CAN PPL FLY? Okay, Im going to level with you - they cant :P At least not normally. Yet I flew above a beautiful lake just the other night on a magic carpet ride.

It was really a wonderful experience to be part of working committee of MMU Career Fair 2011 :) It was fruitful when I get to approach and talk to seasoned ppl who have been ventured to working world. It was fun to work in a same team with bunch of friends and I get to know a lot of new friends as well :D It was great to be a PR for DHL during career fair where I'd learnt so much from them and gained a lot of experiences. I'd learnt how to shoulder responsibility better and talked maturely.

This year, there are 59 companies setting up their booth in career fair 2011. I always love career fair because it offers a platform where you can actually meet up face to face with your favorite company representative and you may have the aptitude to see the road way down more clearly and easily. It gives you some insight. and it gives you the ability to see further down the road.

It doesn't take a genius to realize that in the end, all of the things we aim for are ways to increase our happiness and that happiness is our ultimate goal as living, breathing human beings. It does take a bit of a genius though to achieve a high and sustainable level of happiness :/

I'd a good conversation with my supervisor the other day and I would really wanna share with you guys. Its really interesting to talk to him. He gives me some insights with his words.

I think there are a couple of types of persons around us.

First. The party person. The person who knows how to have fun but not how to get fulfillment. They do the things they're passionate about. They typically have a lot of hobbies and they party a lot (therefore the name haha). However they often end up reflecting upon their lives and feeling unfulfilled because sth is missing.

Second, the spiritual person. This is the person who is aware of the importance of contribution and a higher purpose. But they often work themselves like a mule and forget to have some fun.

Two typical extreme types of person.

Of course there is also a third type of ppl who dont go after pleasure or fulfillment and they pretty much gave up on life.

Okayy I get a lil random right now you must be wondering. I just wanna share about that to have a contented and happy life if and only if you

acknowledge both sides of happiness - pleasure and fulfillment
seek to balance them out in our life

Its the mix of pleasure and fulfillment that's key. Just combine activities that give us pleasure with activities that give us fulfillment everyday :)

I am always amazed by how ppl talking. I find that its always a much better mode to add value in someone's life through a conversation than just being nice to him/her. Its through the style in the conversation. I'd a short conversation with a young lecturer in my uni while I was waiting to meet up with my supervisor last afternoon. It gives me a huge impression for the lecturer just within the 5 min conversation.

I like ppl adding value in the conversation. It fits well with the personality. It shows the confidence and proficiency of language. I think he is one of the best Nanotechnology lecturer though he has never taught me before.

There are many ways to add value in a conversation. You can be the wise person who inspires others. You can be a funny person who gives a humorous spin to everything and gets everyone laughing. You can be the good person who reassures the needed persons with cheesy compliments or shallow encouragements. You can be a knowledgeable person who is always charming, well, i mean with good general knowledge but not just being a photocopy machine of text book.

There are 2 types of fear, both legitimate fear and illegitimate fear.

When a tiger comes near you, there is fear, and it is a legitimate fear. The fear of future is not legitimate. In fact it is interesting, even exciting, not to know about the future.

As children we dont have fear. Elders sow the concept of fear. Then fear becomes a part of us. A child easily falls. Then a fear is installed. Slowly as the child grows up she is afraid to fall. The body becomes rigid and resists a graceful fall.

Emotional lock? Intellectual lock?

as long as it allow you to grow in love, in silence and joy. We just have to learn to frame an experience in such a way that there is growth.

有时候根本懒得向任何人交代我的一切, 而让人却步了, 觉得我不够成熟, 让人生气了, 觉得我不尊重. 有时侯过度透露我的一切, 而让人不安了, 觉得我是个无法给人安全感的笨蛋, 让人失望了, 觉得我还是个爱玩的小妹妹.

数天前, 我终于把最后一张试卷呈上了. 我还以为自己会有多雀跃, 但其实什么都没有. 步出考堂, 背后还传来考生们的欢呼. 他们都是用功的学生吧? 因为只有真正努力熬过来的人, 才会对一场痛苦的结束有切身的感受. 那是一种解脱的心情. 我可能没有认真投入过, 所以最后也只能在别人快乐的时候, 置身事外. 然而, 我不是对所有结束都那么无动于衷. 只是, 路走了那么远, 我知道, 面对人事物的结束, 无论有再深的感慨, 也是无常. 重点在于当下的处理方法. 是要将难过的心情表现出来? 还是藏在心底让它淡去? 如无意外, 我通常选择后者.

毕竟, 很多事情不是我说了算. 别生气了好吗? 别再学我MIA了. 希望我香港回来后, 你的气也该消了.

Sometimes I really think that a few words of support can make us feel much better! Well-placed words of reassurance can have a massive impact. They encourage me to get thru the though days, and help to keep me motivated when things are going well.

When we stumbled and hurt ourselves while playing as a kid, with tears and blood streaming down, it felt good to be gently told : "There..there..Everything is going to be fine." Given alongside the bandage.

Being adult, I realize the grown up reality that everything doesn't always turn out to be fine. I mean, not ironing out as planned. Thats why its even more valuable for us to be reminded that it is possible to come out the other side albeit with a few bumps and bruises.

Having someone else reassure us that we can face up to today's challenges can give us exactly the strength that's required to tackle them head on.

But, itsn't it a sign of weakness to need the reassurance of others?

ABSOLUTELY NOT!

The future is mapped out for none of us. No one can ever be totally sure how things will turn out. True, we plan, predict and make educated guesses, but there is never a money back guarantee that we will end up with the outcomes we want. It's not surprising. Therefore, that we often look to others ppl to provide us with the reassurance we lack. This background of self doubt and unforeseen circumstances can be distressing.

Surely, someone else can make us believe that tml will turn out fine, after all. Thats what we need to believe, despite what life throws at us. Both the good and the bad stuff.

Maybe you feel like this urself sometimes. I know I do.

If someone has been kind, thank him or her today.

We cant show gratitude without sharing it with someone. Its a way of sharing our joy with that person. Even as simple as burning a candle to show gratitude to God. I recalled how ppl lit the candles in the world tallest church I'd visited back in Ulm Minster last autumn. It shares the joy with everyone who sees the flame of candle. It strengthens their faith.

Each day we come across beauty in a number of shapes and forms. But we have become so accustomed to this beauty that it largely goes unappreciated. The most wasted of all days is the one without laughter. How very true. Never be too busy to laugh. Or too serious to smile. This is specially dedicated to all my fellow friends who are currently so being caught up with stresses and strains of uni life. Yea you get to see a lot of flat faces if you would stay in the MMU library for just a few moments right now. But the good thing is there are a lot of my good friends there in the library with me :)

yea we're not alone lol.

Lastly, lets put on a happy face! Sometimes we have to fake it until we make it. I'm not suggesting that we not be real or authentic, but im suggesting, sometimes, we just need to put on a happy face and keep moving forward :D

Personality typing systems abound on the internet, some of them more reputable than others. FB quizzes and other social media sites will tell you everything from which cartoon character we are most like to what love story our life most resembles. Yaa you can spend hours answering the questions that help you clarify what you are like and some personality buckets you fit into. These are fun but are they really useful???

One of the biggest "ah ha" moments for me is understanding the vast differences in personality types. I used to be confused or take it personally when someone wouldn't be pleased by the same thing that pleased me. I feel like the picture I see from my eyes are a different world from others seeing it..sometimes :) But I learn to know that ppl with diff personality types aint trying to be frustrating nor annoying- they are just being genuine :) They are probably just as frustrated and annoyed by me as I am by them ROFL.
